PROTECTOWIRE - Splicing Instructions

Protectowire Linear Heat Detector

Protectowire PWSC Splicing Connectors, 2 Point, Nylon Construction

Installation / Restoration
During installation, lengths of Protectowire Linear Heat Detector may be spliced together to form detector lengths up to the maximum allowed by the initiating device circuit being used.

After a portion of Protectowire Linear Heat Detector has been actuated by exposure to heat, it is restored to normal operation by removing the actuated portion and splicing in a replacement piece of detector. Removing at least 3 feet (0.9m) beyond the actuated portion in both directions is recommended to ensure the Detector's integrity.
The following instructions show the recommended procedure for splicing Protectowire Linear Heat Detector using PWSC splicing connectors.

1. Strip Outer Jacket
Remove 7/8" (2.2cm) of the detectors outer jacket exposing the internal Mylar™ wrap.

2. Remove Mylar™ Wrap
Remove 7/8 in. (2.2cm) of the Detector's Mylar™ wrap, being careful not to damage the internal heat sensitive conductors.

3. Strip Inner Conductors
Strip 1/2 in. (1.3cm) of heat sensitive insulation from the inner conductors leaving 3/8 in. (0.9cm) of insulation on each.

4 . Bend Inner Conductors
The inner conductors of the Detector should be bent to allow insertion into the PWSC Splicing Connector. To avoid damage to the inner conductors this should not be done with pliers.

5. Insert and Tighten Splicing Connector
The entire 1/2 in. (1.3cm) portion of exposed inner conductors should be embedded within the PWSC Splicing Connector. This will ensure it is below both terminal screws. Each terminal screw is then tightened. At this point the screw turrets may be trimmed to allow for easier taping of the splice.

6. Seal Splice (Outdoor and High Humidity Installations)
Using 4-5 in. (10.1cm - 12.7cm) of SFTS Sealing Tape, start 2 in. (5.1cm) before the splicing connector and wrap the splice. Stretch and overlap each wrap by 1/2 - 1/4 of the width tapes width to insure a proper seal. Sealing tape is recommended for outdoor and high humidity installations.

7. Tape Splice
Using "Scotch/3M" brand "Super 33+" or "No. 35" electrical tape, start 2 in. (5.1cm) before the splicing connector and wrap the splice. Stretch and overlap each wrap of the tape by 1/2 - 1/4 of the tapes width to ensure a proper seal.
